Breathe Deeply and Smile by Katarina Hackman
This exhibition of original acrylic paintings on canvas continues my exploration of the challenges facing us in this pressured world: how do we manage the pressures and importantly how do we rebalance, recentre and energise ourselves.
Some answers can lie in resting our minds on another place for a while. Gum Leaf Meditation I, Gum Leaf Meditation II and Silver Gum Nuts suggest the opportunity to focus, rebalance, and energise our minds, always remembering to breathe deeply. Other answers can lie in seeing something different, surprising or having a laugh to lighten our spirits. In Galaxy in Blue and White and Tea Time in Blue and White there is a surprising use of ceramic floral arrangements. Even more surprising, in one painting a turtle looks longingly up at the flowers as it wanting to eat them and in the other fish chase around the pot and tea cups. A Twirl of Bananas encourages us to think differently about our fruit platter. Bananas on the Move and Bananas on the Go that then gather with other bananas in the larger painting A Band of Bananas all provide a sense of whimsy, an opportunity to smile.

About Katrina
Katarina commenced her art practice in the 1990s, focusing on printmaking, drawing and watercolour while also working full-time. Over the following 20 years, she continued to study part-time and develop her approach, incorporating acrylic painting into her art practice and achieving many private sales. Since 2012, with more time for her art practice, Katarina’s focus shifted to painting and drawing landscapes using watercolour, ink, and graphite. She participated in a series of successful group exhibitions, selling artworks, also securing private commissions. Since 2019, Katarina’s art practice has concentrated on painting in acrylics on canvas using a colourist perspective, particularly Still Life, which is the focus of this exhibition, her sixth at the Corban & Blair Window Gallery.
