Thomas “Bagaay” Avery is a descendant of the Kamilaroi tribe of Northern New South Wales, Australia. Many of Thomas’s ancestors were born at the Bohena Creek Aboriginal Reserve, Narrabri. His designs feature the creatures of inland Australia including the kangaroo, wallaby, emu, platypus, gecko and goanna. His family is one of the stolen generation. His totem is the Eagle and his Aboriginal name is Bagaay, meaning river or creek.
He is known for his work on silk, canvas, stone and surfboards; his Indigenous designs on silk scarves were chosen as gifts for Commonwealth Head of Government (CHOGM) delegates in 2002.
